Three clays, three jobs

We work with three clay bodies. Which one we pick depends on what the pot is for.

Unglazed terracotta sprouting dish with a lid, filled with fresh sprouts

Unglazed terracotta

Porous and slightly cool to the touch. Pulls moisture out of salt and lets garlic breathe. Also used for our sprouting dishes.

Dark milk-fired clay jars with carved lettering

Milk-fired dark clay

Fired twice, the second time after a dip in milk. The surface closes up and turns deep brown, with no glaze needed.

Speckled glazed stoneware canisters on a walnut stand

Glazed stoneware

High-fired and sealed with lead-free glaze. Wipes clean, holds colour, safe for the dishwasher.

Garlic & onion keepers

Dark, dry and ventilated — the way a cellar used to be

Garlic and onions sprout when they sit in light and sweat in plastic. A pierced clay keeper does what a root cellar did: it blocks light, lets air move through, and the clay wall takes up any damp.

Ours are carved with leaf and flower cut-outs by hand, so the pattern of holes is never quite the same twice. The lid lifts with a central knob and sits loosely, which is the point.

Why clay

What a clay pot does that a glass jar doesn't

Keeps salt loose

Unglazed clay absorbs stray humidity, so flaky salt stays pinchable instead of clumping.

Lets produce breathe

Pierced keepers move air around garlic and onions, slowing mould and sprouting.

Blocks light

Spices lose aroma in light. Opaque clay keeps paprika red and cumin sharp for longer.

Fits the hand

Lids lift with one finger. Mouths fit a teaspoon. Made to be used, not displayed.

From the workshop

Fired in a wood kiln, one batch a fortnight

Every keeper and spice pot goes through the same hands — thrown, carved while leather-hard, dried for a week, then fired overnight. We photograph what comes out of the kiln and list it the same week.

Our story

It started with a salt pig that kept clumping

In 2019 we bought a pretty glazed salt pot at a market in Modra. It looked right and worked badly: the glaze sealed the clay, and within a week the salt was a brick. We went back and asked the potter why. That conversation turned into a weekend hobby, then a small stall, then this shop.

Today we work with six workshops in Slovakia, Ukraine and Portugal. We don't own a kiln ourselves anymore — we spend our time testing pots in our own kitchen and writing honest descriptions of what each one does well.

"If a pot needs a label to tell you what it's for, the shape is wrong."

Care

How to look after unglazed clay

Before first use

Rinse in warm water without soap and let dry overnight. Terracotta will darken slightly where it's wet; that's normal.

Day to day

Wipe with a dry cloth. Salt cellars rarely need washing. If you do, use water only — unglazed clay holds onto detergent smell.

Keepers

Empty and air out once a month. If a keeper picks up an onion smell, a paste of baking soda and water, rinsed off, clears it.

Gifting

Any order can be wrapped in kraft paper with a handwritten card. Add a note at checkout — we write it out ourselves.

What people say after a few months of use

★★★★★

The pebble cellar sits next to the hob and the salt hasn't clumped once since February. Lid is heavier than it looks, which I like.

Bought the garlic keeper mostly for the carving, kept it because the garlic actually lasts. Shipping to Vienna took four days.

Sack pots are smaller than I pictured — about a teacup — but that's the right size for spices you use often. The brass spoons are a nice touch.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Anything else — write to us at contact@Tirgusio.shop or use the form below.

Yes. Our terracotta is fired above 1000 °C and contains no added pigments or sealants. It's the same clay used for traditional bread and bean pots.

Salt can leave a faint white bloom on the outside of unglazed pots after a year or two. It wipes off with a damp cloth and doesn't weaken the pot. Glazed stoneware doesn't show it at all.

Glazed stoneware canisters — yes. Unglazed terracotta and milk-fired pieces — please don't; they absorb detergent. A rinse in warm water is all they need.

Slovakia 1–3 working days, Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary 2–4, rest of the EU 3–7. We ship with Packeta and GLS and email tracking the day it leaves.

Send us a photo within 7 days and we'll ship a replacement or refund you, whichever you prefer. You don't need to send the broken piece back.

A little, especially on speckled glazes and milk-fired clay — the kiln decides the final shade. The shape and size are consistent.
